The couple exchanged vows on May 7, 2006, and reaffirmed their commitment on May 8, 2010. They are blessed with five children: daughters Stella Doreen, 14, Hattie Margaret, 11, and sons Liam Aaron, 16, Finn Davey, 10, and Beau Dean, 6.

McDermott's separation announcement coincided with Spelling sharing family photos to celebrate daughter Stella's birthday. On her Instagram Story, Spelling posted pictures and videos capturing their day at the Beverly Hilton, where they had a fun-filled time by the pool and indulged in delicious treats, including a delightful birthday cake.

The alum of Beverly Hills, 90210 and the Canadian actor have navigated through numerous highs and lows in their relationship, including instances of McDermott's infidelity in the past. PEOPLE's sources have previously disclosed that trust issues played a role in their ongoing marital challenges.

"Tori still has major trust issues with Dean. And he's like, 'We moved on from that.' It's complicated and a very toxic and rocky situation," stated one source, while another added, "Part of their relationship was never fully repaired after he was unfaithful."

In 2014, McDermott publicly confessed to cheating on Spelling, and their journey together was documented on their reality series, True Tori. During an episode, McDermott expressed his feelings of shame, saying, "I feel shame. I've never felt shame before."

In an appearance on the Women on Top podcast hosted by Roxy Manning and Tammin Sursok in August 2020, Spelling discussed the scandal. She expressed pride in not concealing her marital issues from the cameras but acknowledged the unintended consequence of her young children being exposed to that information due to its online dissemination.

"My kids have not seen clips, but they've seen something out there online, and my daughter saw something," revealed Spelling. "It really upset her."

While Spelling expressed pride in her story "living online" and acknowledged that it wasn't something she considered in the moment, navigating their relationship following the scandal proved challenging.

"My biggest fear in our relationship was I was like, he's going to cheat on me, he's going to cheat on me, he's going to cheat on me," she shared. "So when it happened, I was like, 'See, I always thought from day one he was going to cheat on me,' and it wasn't about him, that was about me. I was like, 'Okay, I know I'm not good enough,' that's how I felt about myself, and one day he's going to realize that and he's gonna find someone else."

Multiple sources previously informed PEOPLE that the marriage of the couple faced strain after Spelling shared a holiday card on Instagram in December 2021, noticeably missing McDermott.

In the comments, Spelling clarified that the actor was "filming his new feature film in Canada" when the photo was taken. However, a source revealed at the time that she and McDermott were "not in a good place and have been evaluating their relationship."

"It's been very chilly between them for a long time. They have been through the wringer before, but they've always gotten out of it," the source explained. "They've been living separate lives. They will still have family meals and occasional outings, but it's for the kids."

A second source stated that things had been strained between them for an extended period, at least over a year.

"But Tori doesn't want to break up the family," the insider continued. "She believes the kids need their dad. These are their formative years, and they've fought to stay together for the kids."

Several years following McDermott's infidelity, Spelling spoke to PEOPLE in 2016, discussing their efforts to salvage their marriage.

"We're not just still here, but we're bonded and solidified as a couple," she expressed.

Spelling shared that after McDermott's admission of cheating, "everything crashed." She explained, "We had to start over. We had to completely rebuild."

Over time, and through dedicated couples therapy and personal growth, "we made the conscious decision based on our love for each other to tough it out and work through it," Spelling disclosed.

"It was one of the worst times in our lives, but it was also one of the best times," the mother of five reflected. "I wouldn't change anything because if we hadn't started talking and opened up those lines of communication, maybe we wouldn't be here today."

In April, the host of the 9021OMG podcast joyfully posed with her husband and their five children for a collective photograph at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, California.

"Happy Easter xo. Desert 🌴 is magical for all," Spelling wrote in a caption accompanying the delightful family picture on her Instagram grid, which she also shared on her Instagram Story.

In the photo, Spelling embraced the sunny weather with her attire, wearing black shorts, an oversized bright green blouse, and platform boots. Stella also opted for elevated footwear, donning blue platform strappy sandals along with a pastel floral dress.

Spelling's Easter pictures also showcased moments of Beau's enjoyment, capturing his participation in an Easter egg hunt and posing with Easter bunnies while dressed in cozy onesie pajamas.

McDermott, who is also the father of Jack, 24, from his previous marriage to Mary Jo Eustace, shared the same family group picture on Instagram. In the caption, he expressed that it was "another wonderful Easter under our belts."

"The kids are growing so quickly and becoming quite fashionable!!! I need to step up my game. Hope you all had a fantastic Easter," he added, tagging the resort.
